Raipur: Earthen lamps made of cow dung were in huge demand among people during the recently ended Diwali festival. The markets were flooded with Diyas made by women self-help groups out of cow dung from state-run Gothans (cow sheds).
As many as 10 women self help groups of Bilaspur district sold more than 2.11 lakh diyas during the festive season. With the sale of these diyas they generated an income of more than Rs 6.33 lakh.
Under the Godhan Nyaya Yojana, along with vermicompost compost earthen lamps were also made for Deepawali festival from cow dung being purchased in Gothans. More than 100 women members of women self-help groups from various parts of the district made attractive and beautiful earthen lamps out of this cow dung. The diyas were sold at a price of Rs 3 per piece.
Meanwhile, about 86, 403 quintals of cow dung have been purchased in Gothans under the Godhan Nyaya Yojana so far.
