Commercial tax min TS Singh Deo suggests zero per cent GST on medicines, medical items and equipment in treatment of Covid-19

Raipur: Commercial Tax Minister TS Singh Deo suggested zero per cent GST on medicines, medical items and equipment used in coronavirus control and its treatment.

He gave this suggestion during virtual meeting of the GST Council held on Friday under the chairmanship of the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. This was the 43rd meeting of the council.

The minister told the Chairman of GST Council Nirmala Sitharaman in the council meeting that this is a difficult time of pandemic. To give relief to the state governments and citizens, zero percent GST should be imposed on medicines, medical items and equipment used for control and treatment of Covid-19. In view of the present circumstances, the Central Government should consider implementing it for a limited time. Referring to the rules of GST, he said that the GST law itself has provisions for imposing zero percent GST on products.

He also demanded to allow states to levy one percent cess on GST to increase their revenue. He suggested that its maximum limit be kept at five percent. Disagreeing with the proposal of three monthly returns and three monthly payment systems for the businessmen, he said that the present system should continue. According to the current system, there is a provision for quarterly return and monthly payment.
