Prisoner dies of Covid-19 in Raipur Central Jail, condition of two more affected prisoner is serious

Raipur: A 32-year-old prisoner died Central Jail of Raipur due to Covid-19 on Sunday. Besides, situation of two other corona infected prisoner is serious.

Jail DIG KK Gupta has confirmed the news and said that the deceased prisoner was brought for treatment from Balodabazar. He said that we are taking more precaution this time and are conscious that the infection does not spread this time. Every day 20-25 new prisoners come here. The corona report of the prisoners comes late, which is a threat.

He further added that in the first phase of the corona, the High Court, recognizing the risk of infection, had allowed the prisoners to be released on parole. However, releasing prisoners on parole is not a solution right now, because the risk of infection is equal both inside prison and outside.

Meanwhile, as per official sources, prisoners are kept in Raipur central jail thrice from its capacity. The Raipur Central Jail has a capacity of about 1100 prisoners, but usually around 3,000 prisoners are kept here. This is increasing overcrowding in the barracks which increases possibility of spread of coronavirus among large number of people there.

In the first phase of coronavirus outbreak last year, nearly 50 prisoners were infected in Raipur Central Jail. This was the condition of many jails across the state. A large number of prisoners kept in state jails were found corona positive.

When there were fewer cases of Corona in the month of March last year, inmates from many districts were released on interim bail and parole under certain conditions. Thousands of prisoners were released on parole from several jails in Chhattisgarh to prevent overcrowding and spread of infection. This needs to be done this time too.
