Covid vaccination for 18+ postponed in Chhattisgarh

Raipur: The corona vaccination programme for people above 18 years which was scheduled to be start from May 1 has been postponed in Chhattisgarh state.

Covaxin manufacturer Bharat Biotech has told the government that the company will not be able to send the vaccines before the last week of July. On the other hand, the government has not received any response from the manufacturer of Covishield, Serum Institute.

Chhattisgarh State Immunization Officer Dr Amar Singh Thakur said that the government had placed an order of 25 lakh doses each of Covishield and Covaxin to both companies. Today, Bharat Biotech has responded to supply vaccines by end of July. However there is no response from Serum Institute yet. The senior officials are trying to connect with the company.

“After its response, then the government will be able to decide when the vaccination will start for people between 18 and 45 years will actually start. In this phase of vaccination, an estimated target of vaccinating 1.20 crore people. The state government has to bear the entire cost of vaccination in this phase of the campaign which is estimated to be about Rs 1000 crore”, he said.

He added that CoWin portal and Arogya Setu app will open today for registration for people between 18 to 45 years of age. However, without the availability of the vaccine, you will not be able to book the vaccination center and time slot. In that case, that registration will have no meaning.

Meanwhile, he informed that the vaccination campaign of people above 45 years of age, health workers and frontline workers will continue as before.
