Raipur. Jagmohan, a farmer of Koriya district, is a living example of how a small resource can change livelihood. Jagmohan, who lives in Girjapur of Baikunthpur block, cultivated his three-and-a-half-acre farm through the rain. They could not even think about Rabi crops. But the MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) changed their fortunes. Now they are cultivating vegetables along with Kharif and Rabi crops.
Jagmohan applied to the Gram Panchayat for a well in his field under MNREGA. After the approval of the Gram Sabha, in the year 2019-20, the District Panchayat approved an amount of two lakh 20 thousand rupees for digging the well. During the construction, Jagmohan's family also got direct employment of 46 days, for which they got nine thousand rupees. The well not only made irrigation easier but, his family does not have to wander for water. Earlier, during the scorching summer days, the whole family had to face many difficulties.
Jagmohan says that the well solved many of his problems. The anxiety of sustenance has gone away because they can work throughout the year. During the last lock-down implemented due to Covid, they earned 15 thousand to 20 thousand rupees by producing vegetables like peas, garlic, tomatoes, potatoes. Last year, he had a profit of more than 50 thousand rupees.
