Social worker Virendra Pandey has demands cancellation of BALCO's Chotia Coal mine

Raipur: Social worker Virendra Pandey has demanded cancellation of Chotia Coal mine located in Hasdeo Arand coal field in Korba district allocated to BALCO and to forfeit its performance security amount.

Pandey said that the mine was allotted by Bharat Aluminum Company Limited Korba for coal extraction at Chotia-2. On October 26, 2015, BALCO opened the mine for which the highest bid was made by BALCO. According to the contract, 12 lakh tonnes of coal was to be released annually, but after closing the mine for the last one year, coal mining and transportation has been stopped from April 2020. The information of which has also not been given to the government.

Besides, according to the highest bid submitted by BALCO, the amount of bid amount, royalty and DMF is to be given on the basis of per tonne every month which is not being made available. The bid price is Rs 3281.12 per tonne. The royalty of coal is Rs 245.98 per tonne of G-8 and Rs 148.88 per tonne of G-12. At the same time, the amount of DMF is 10 percent of the royalty and Rs 11.25 per tonne for environment and development equipment. These are not being paid at all. Due to the closure of mining, the government is losing revenue of Rs 36 crore per month.

Pandey has alleged that this is harming the government. BALCO has broken the contract. The reason for closure of the mine by BALCO is being attributed to Covid-19 while BALCO's power plant as well as their other units was running regularly. He said that the government needs to pay serious attention over the matter.
